WELL CONTROL MANUAL - LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY
Chapter 1
DRILLING AND COMPLETION FLUIDS
Preparation and
maintaining of drilling fluids is based on the functions that the fluids must
accomplish. Some general fluid properties, such as density and viscosity,
together with specific characteristics unique to drilling fluids, such as
filtration control and lubricity, have direct impact on the function of the mud.
For example, density dictates the hydrostatic pressure exerted over a
formation. Viscosity and density dictate the ability of fluid to carry cutting
out of the wellbore, etc. the purposes of the chapter are to present (1) the primary
functions of the drilling fluids, (2) the diagnostic test procedures used to determine
whether the drilling fluid has suitable properties for performing these
functions, and (3) the common additives used to obtain the desirable properties
under various well conditions. .....

INTRODUCTION TO DEEPWATER DRILLING TECHNOLOGY (NEXT NETWORK OF EXCELLENCE IN TRAINING)
Topics to be covered
- What is deepwater drilling?
- Deepwater provinces - regional differences
- Deepwater riser
- Deepwater rigs and operations
- High deepwater drilling costs and deepwater alternatives slim hole, dual mud gradient systems
- Evolving deepwater drilling technology – Deepwater field development concepts deep draft caisson vessel (DDCV-SPAR) vs. TLP (tension leg platforms)
- Challenges of deepwater technology
- Conclusions
Introduction
•What is “Deepwater?”
–This is an evolving notion
–Presently considered to be water depth deeper than 1500 ft, ultra-deepwater meaning > 5000 ft of water
•Where is deepwater drilling taking place?
–Present water depth drilling record: 9111 ft (Brazil 2000); 6592 ft 1998; 5700 1982)
–World water depth record for a producing well: 6080 ft (Roncador field, Brazil, 1999)
Unconsolidated Shallow Sediments
- 30” pipe is jetted in (with drill-ahead tool)
- 30” pipe is structural, not conductor. Usually 80 to 100 m long
- 20” pipe is conductor, not surface casing. It is run in open water (26” hole drilled riserless).
- On mobile offshore drilling units (MODU), BOPs and marine risers are run on top, but no use of BOPs in 17-1/2” hole (No shut-in).
- 13-3/8” casing acting as surface casing
- Very low fracture gradients

COORDINATE SYSTEMS AND DEFINITIONS (NEXT NETWORK OF EXCELLENCE IN TRAINING)
At the end of this lecture, YOU will be able to;
- Name the most common map projection model and state the main
error introduced by the model.
- Demonstrate the correct use of Latitude,
Longitude and depth datum to define positions on Earth’s surface and within the
crust.
- State the differences between the different
North’s and correct magnetic readings to True North.
- Describe what is meant by “ellipse of
uncertainty” and “travelling cylinder”.
- Convert positions between Absolute and relative coordinates.
