Chapter 1
DRILLING AND COMPLETION FLUIDS

          Preparation and maintaining of drilling fluids is based on the functions that the fluids must accomplish. Some general fluid properties, such as density and viscosity, together with specific characteristics unique to drilling fluids, such as filtration control and lubricity, have direct impact on the function of the mud. For example, density dictates the hydrostatic pressure exerted over a formation. Viscosity and density dictate the ability of fluid to carry cutting out of the wellbore, etc. the purposes of the chapter are to present (1) the primary functions of the drilling fluids, (2) the diagnostic test procedures used to determine whether the drilling fluid has suitable properties for performing these functions, and (3) the common additives used to obtain the desirable properties under various well conditions. .....
