INTRODUCTION TO DEEPWATER WELL CONTROL (NEXT - NETWORK OF EXCELLENCE IN TRAINING)

At the end of the lecture, you should be able to:
  1. Describe the key aspects of well control in deepwater operations
Deepwater well control
  • Define Deepwater Well control?
  • When can it occur?
  • Why,how, can it occur?
  • What are the hazards, risks, probability and consequence of well control incidents?
  • What plans and processes will be used to manage and control well control incidents?
  • Are all aspects “fit for purpose” ?

Deepwater special considerations

  • Preparing to kill a well
  • Well control with bit off bottom
  • Well control with bit on bottom
  • Volumetric stripping operations
  • Kill with no pipe in hole
  • Circulating gas from riser and BOP’s
  • Bullheading operations
  • Shearing pipe
  • Shallow well control
  • Lost circulation

DEEPWATER EQUIPMENT SYSTEMS (NEXT NETWORK OF EXCELLENCE IN TRAINING)

At the end of the lecture, you will be able to:
  1. Appreciate the various type of equipment systems used in deepwater operations

Offshore Rig Equipment
  • Work boats
  • Tubular and riser handling equipment
  • Compensation equipment
  • Elevating equipment or Station keeping
  • Mud system
  • Subsea equipment
                  –  Remote operated vehicles (ROV’s)
                  –  Wellheads, templates, manifolds
                  –  Xmas trees BOPs

INTRODUCTION TO DEEPWATER DRILLING TECHNOLOGY (NEXT NETWORK OF EXCELLENCE IN TRAINING)

Topics to be covered

  • What is deepwater drilling?
  • Deepwater provinces - regional differences
  • Deepwater riser
  • Deepwater rigs and operations
  • High deepwater drilling costs and deepwater alternatives slim hole, dual mud gradient systems
  • Evolving deepwater drilling technology  – Deepwater field development concepts deep draft caisson vessel (DDCV-SPAR) vs. TLP (tension leg platforms)
  • Challenges of deepwater technology
  • Conclusions

Introduction

•What is “Deepwater?”
–This is an evolving notion

–Presently considered to be water depth deeper than 1500 ft, ultra-deepwater meaning > 5000 ft of water

•Where is deepwater drilling taking place?
–Present water depth drilling record: 9111 ft (Brazil 2000); 6592 ft 1998; 5700 1982)

–World water depth record for a producing well: 6080 ft (Roncador field, Brazil, 1999)

Unconsolidated Shallow Sediments

  • 30” pipe is jetted in (with drill-ahead tool)
  • 30” pipe is structural, not conductor. Usually 80 to 100 m long
  • 20” pipe is conductor, not surface casing. It is run in open water (26” hole drilled riserless).
  • On mobile offshore drilling units (MODU), BOPs and marine risers are run on top, but no use of BOPs in 17-1/2” hole (No shut-in).
  • 13-3/8” casing acting as surface casing
  • Very low fracture gradients

Terminology,
Applications,
Basic Survey Calculation Methods,
Directional Drilling Tools.

Lecture Objectives
At the end of this lecture YOU will be able to:
Define directional drilling techniques
Identify well types,
Describe the related terminologies,
Understand the applications of directional drilling,
List surveying and calculation methods,
Describe Various BHAs and Downhole Tools.

Wellbore Survey

Background

Recently, technology have advanced in such away that the former directional drilling tools were replaced with an advanced ones such as:
Steerable mud motors,
MWD,
Andergauge Stabilizers,
LWD.
These tools, in combination, could provide  a 3D well profiles without changing BHA and have enabled the drilling of horizontal and multi lateral wells.
